Strategic Change Canvas

The Strategic Change Canvas brings people together to discuss the questions at the heart of change strategy. By working through each section, alignment is built and co-created change strategy emerges.

Describe “what” the change is, then “why” you’re doing it (the purpose / aspirational future-state), then “how” you will do it. The “how” is the key pillars that enable the “what” — the big, visible things people will see that make the change happen.

Why the change is important from the perspective of current-state pain points, and new opportunities that are out of reach for the organization.

Sponsor coalition: Who is the primary sponsor? Other sponsors?
Core team: Which roles are required for the core team?
SMEs: Who will provide functional knowledge to the initiative?
Change agents: Influential stakeholders who will support the change.

Quick wins: What will demonstrate that the change is on track?
Readiness: How will we know people are prepared for the change?
Business metrics: Outcomes the organization views as success.
Adoption: Targets for how quickly people will adopt the change.
Utilization: Targets for how often people will use the change.
Proficiency: Targets for how well people work with the change.

Can be measurable (quantifiable) or observable (qualitative) in nature.

Technology: Changes to hardware and/or software.
Process: Changes to actions or steps taken to achieve a particular end.
Organizational: Changes to job roles, reporting structure, etc.
Behaviour: Changes to habits, ways of thinking, etc.

Directly impacted: People doing the work being impacted.
Indirectly impacted: People upstream or downstream of the work.
Interested: Stakeholders interested in the outcomes of the change.

Co-creation: How will the change be co-created with stakeholders?
Feedback: How can stakeholders provide feedback on the change?
Key messages: What are the key messages stakeholders need to receive?
Tools/channels: How can we reach / interact with stakeholders?

Training: How people will be trained (VILT, e-learning, in-person, etc.).
Coaching: People who require coaching to fulfill their role in the change.
Documentation: What documentation will be required? E.g., job aids, training documentation, etc.
Sustainment: How the change will be sustained post go-live.
